A safe and secure backyard retreat
Project by Oasis Pools Ltd.
When these Ancaster, Ont., homeowners decided to install an elegant, multi-functional pool to complete their new dream home and serve as an entertainment space for their children and grandchildren, they knew Oasis Pools Ltd., would do an exquisite job. In the ‘80s, the Burlington, Ont., company installed a freeform kidney-shaped pool at their previous home, which provided the family with years of outdoor fun.
To complement their new home and its classic, sophisticated look, the homeowners required a stylish pool, spa, and outdoor entertaining space with minimalist design, so as not to compete with the area’s lush natural setting. The installation needed to be big enough to suit the vast property and accommodate large groups of children.
With depth ranging from 1 to 2.4 m (3.3 to 8 ft), this rectangular 6- x 15-m (20- x 50-ft) gunite concrete pool offers ample space for play, exercise, and swimming laps. It features an inset by the 2.4- x 3-m (8- x 10-ft) spa, complete with a three-sided vanishing edge spill-over and flanked by the pool’s walk-in stairs. The installation includes a Quartz plaster finish and a porcelain tile border, framed with formed and poured architectural concrete coping. To maximize safety and comfort, each corner of the pool’s deep-end includes a 1.5-m (5-ft) long swim-out area.
Illuminated with a series of coloured light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the saltwater pool features many technical amenities, including a variable-speed pump (VSP), cartridge filtration, and an automation system that allows the homeowner to operate the pool using their smartphone. As safety and ease of maintenance were of utmost importance to the homeowners, Oasis Pools installed an automatic cover, which is concealed in a custom-made concrete below-ground vault. The system allows the owners to travel for extended periods without worrying about the safety and security of their pool, as they are notified via e-mail if the cover is opened.
The pool is centred on the main great room window. From inside the home, its size and symmetrical design creates a long and elegant focal point. A light-grey stone deck leads from the pool to a large patio area, surrounded with flowerbeds and manicured shrubbery. The space connects to an open-concept cabana, complete with an outdoor kitchen and bar, suitable for entertaining large groups.
