Modern meets rustic

Backyard paradise features contemporary finishes against a rural set-up

Modern meets rustic

Project by Blue Diamond Pools & Landscaping

This backyard sanctuary set against a rural backdrop in Shanty Bay, Ont., strikes a harmonious balance between the modern and rustic. Flaunting clean contemporary finishes that blend naturally with the ‘rough’ non-symmetrical softscape elements, this space offers a cohesive outdoor living environment, and satisfies the homeowner’s need for entertainment and exercise.

The property has a steady slope from the rear deck all the way down to the treeline; therefore, additional fill had to be brought in two years prior to the installation and graded properly to allow it to settle. The multi-level space (despite additional fill) integrates perfectly into the design and offers gorgeous panoramic views from every angle.

The firepit area took advantage of the low-lying land, where a warm, sunken hideaway was created by using granite boulders and softscape for retention. This bowl-shaped sitting space ensures the homeowners’ privacy from neighbours. The same idea was replicated on the opposite side of the property, where the pool shed was installed at a lower level to be kept out of sight.

The elevated patio offers scenic views of the pool and spa installation, as well as the infinite greenery beyond. The 5.5- x 12.9-m (18- x 42-ft) large rectangular pool bodes well for morning laps, while the integrated 2.4- x 2.4-m (8- x 8-ft) fibreglass spa helps relax sore muscles. The raised spa structure with a sheer descent mimics the look of a spillover unit without having heat control issues. The builder ensured the patio/coping products chosen by the homeowner were integrated properly into the entire project.

The large deck surrounding the pool and spa is perfect for hosting and can accommodate large social gatherings. Further, the pool’s tanning ledge creates an inviting look and offers additional space for lounging and sunbathing. A shared circulation system, running on time clocks, alternates between the two water bodies, while an extra pump installed for the spa’s therapeutic jets runs separately.

All components of this pool and spa installation were completed by Blue
Diamond Pools with landscaping assistance from Drysdale’s Nursery.
