This stunning project, located in Toronto, was designed for a couple with a large family, including grandchildren. The homeowner wanted to use high-end products to achieve an overall elegant look for their backyard retreat, which also included entertaining areas for each member to enjoy.
The 4.3- x 8.5-m (14- x 28-ft) gunite concrete pool size was maximized based on the lot size, without compromising the remainder of the outdoor space. The focal point of the backyard is a 2-m (6.5-ft) square concrete spa, which features custom glass tile imported from California. The spillover is contained by a small trough concealed beneath the flagstone that runs the perimeter of the pool. The glass tile is continued on the steps and the tanning shelf to give the younger grandkids a shallow place to wade into the pool while remaining close to the occupants of the spa. The older children can use the 4.4- x 2.1-m (14.5- x 7-ft) Ipe wood deck on the far side of the pool to cannonball into the shallow end.
The custom stone walls around the perimeter feature multiple light-emitting diode (LED) sheers that sparkle elegantly in the evening and keep the kids enthused with the moving water. Finally, a Badu jet at the end of the pool can be used for fun by the children, or athletics by the adults—who may prefer to get exercise by swimming against the current.
The backyard features a full flagstone deck with a large couch and firepit, as well as a dining area positioned on a 4.9- x 6.1-m (16- x 20-ft) elevated Ipe wood deck. A fully equipped outdoor kitchen and bar area ensures this family relishes delicious meals together.
Solda Pools strategically used various elements to create a sophisticated look for this backyard. While Ipe Brazilian hardwood exudes richness, shimmering glass tiles on the overflow spa lend elegance to the design, and flagstone surrounding the pool guarantees hardiness. Further, automated controls ensure the pool and spa can be operated at the click of a smartphone button to match the homeowner’s mood. Everything other than the glass railings were constructed by Solda Pools.
